I have to stop on my way back to the party and collect myself. Because Courtney was right, that dress did have a built-in bra and when she turned around, she was totally naked from the waist up and I just about had a heart attack right then and there.

God, she’s so beautiful, in so many ways and now I want her more than ever. But not like that asshole, Brock. I was very careful not to touch her when I helped her put my t-shirt on. I might be a privileged bastard, but some lines you don’t cross.

Still, I’m probably going to be dreaming about her beautiful breasts tonight. And wishing they were in my face again.

Grandfather has started his speech by the time I get back to the party. I slip in the door and try to stay inconspicuous, but Isla spots me and works her way through the crowd to my side. She’s tipsy, figuratively and literally, and she causes a commotion as she comes toward me, grabbing onto men’s arms to steady herself in her platform heels. So much for inconspicuous.

“Missed you, baby,” she coos and offers me a glass of champagne. “I saved one for you.”

“Thanks.”

Our fingers brush as I take the crystal flute and Isla bats her eyes. “Where did you go, anyway?”

“I had some personal business to take care of.”

I turn my attention to Grandfather, try to at least pretend I care about what he’s saying, but Isla pokes me in the ribs with her sharp fingernail.

“It’s that girl, huh?” She wrinkles her nose. “Your assistant.”

“Temporary assistant,” I clarify.

Isla heaves a dramatic sigh of relief. “That’s good. By the looks of it, she’s a mess and you do not need someone like that in your life.”

Rage at Brock for slipping a drug to Courtney flashes hot and sharp, followed by the satisfying memory of my fist connecting to his jaw. If I never see him again, it’s too soon.

But Courtney… the thought of her asleep in my bed brings a smile to my lips. Isla’s wrong. Courtney is exactly the kind of person I need in my life. Unpredictable and a bit naïve, but sassy and bossy when she has to be. I think about the way she slapped my hand away from that fake priest in front of Tiffany and my smile gets bigger. I want nothing more than to ditch this party and go back to my room, just so I can see her again.

“I’d like to acknowledge our wonderful borough representative, Molly Garfield,” grandfather says. “We appreciate your presence here tonight.”

There’s a smattering of applause and an older woman with gray hair tips her head, clearly basking in the adulation.

It’s all bullshit, but I guess everyone needs their egos stroked once in a while. I have very little knowledge of what goes on behind the scenes, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw sizable campaign donations listed in that leather folder from the accountants. Grandfather was born to play politics, and he seems to revel in it.
